The rocket that Caden Schmidt hit for a two-run triple to right-center field on Thursday afternoon at Diamond Nation was quite a shot for a guy who batted 11th in an 11-man lineup.

Turns out there was a reason he was batting at the end of the lineup.

Schmidt normally occupies the third or fourth spot in the order for his Mid Atlantic Hurricanes team, but hit at the bottom to give teammates the chance for more at-bats in the contest against Team Boston Upperclass in the Super World Series.

The triple, which was followed by his scoring on a wild pitch, was a highlight in a 7-1 triumph that closed out a successful week for the Hurricanes at ‘The Nation.’

The New Hope, Pa.-based team went 3-1 at the tournament, with a 30-8 run differential. The only loss was a 4-3 setback against LIB Expos Blue on Tuesday.

Declan Glass allowed three hits and one unearned run over four innings for the Hurricanes.

“That hit was a good oppo piece,” Schmidt said. “I was the 11-hole hitter so I was just sitting on fastballs. It was the last game of the tournament so I wanted to give some other guys good ABs.”

The Hurricanes opened up a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

Ryan Frey began the frame by walking on five pitches. Preston Martin followed with a single to center, with Frey moving to third and Martin reaching second on a throw. Jack Hogenauer was up next, and delivered a two-run single to center.

Hogenauer stole second, and then scored after an overthrow on his steal of third with Caden Fitzpatrick at the plate. Fitzpatrick walked, stole second, moved to third when Cooper Weiss grounded out to first and then scored on a wild pitch.

The Hurricanes scored their other runs in the second inning.

Ryan Frey of the Hurricanes slides into third after tagging up on fly out by Preston Martin.

Jude Hamilton led off with a walk, and after an infield pop out, Brayden Carr was hit by a pitch.

Schmidt then got his first chance to hit. After fouling off the first pitch, he connected in a big way by unloading a ball high and deep the opposite way for the stand-up triple. After Frey walked and stole second, Schmidt scored on a wild pitch with Martin at the plate.

Martin ended the game 2-for-3.

Team Boston scored in the fourth inning. Luke Thornton led off and was safe on an error. Shayne King Jr. hit a single to center and the runners advanced on Robbie Walsh’s pitcher-to-first ground out. Justin Fajardo followed with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Declan Glass pitched the first four innings for the Hurricanes. He allowed three hits, with six strikeouts to one walk. Noah Wallace worked the final three innings. He allowed no hits, with three strikeouts and two walks.

“We had a good tournament, with a close loss,” Schmidt said. “I’ll take that, because we played pretty well.”
