It’s been a brilliant spring season for Iron Nine 14U Red, and the Essex County-based team showed why on Sunday afternoon at Diamond Nation.

Iron Nine was matched against RPP Revolution 14U in the final of the 14U Mother’s Day Classic. Riding some early offense and a terrific pitching performance from Luke Sawicki, Iron Nine gained a 3-1 victory for the championship in Flemington.

Iron Nine won three times on Sunday to complete a 5-0 weekend with a 27-12 run differential.

More impressively, the team is now 23-1 on the season, with 18 straight wins since falling to the Diamond Jacks Super 14U in the final of the Williams Harley Davidson tournament at ‘The Nation’ on April 13.

Sawicki was selected tournament MVP after pitching a complete-game three-hitter, with six strikeouts and one walk over 94 total pitches.

He had to outduel Liam Gyure of RPP Revolution, who retired the final 13 batters while allowing three hits over six innings, with seven strikeouts and four walks.

Luke Sawicki of Iron Nine 14U delivered the 14U Mother’s Day Classic MVP to his mom, Candice.

“They were a good team,” Sawicki said. “We were both locked in. My curveball was on point and I was hitting the spots that my coach told me too.”

Iron Nine set a tone by taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

Louis Mattielli started the inning with a walk, and Sawicki followed with a line drive that was going directly toward the head of Gyure. He caught the ball while protecting his face, and threw to first for a double play.

Christian Oligino walked, advanced on a wild pitch and stole third. He scored on a wild pitch before Sam Phillips walked. Cooper Baumwoll hit a first-pitch single to center, and Evan Hammer delivered an RBI single to right.

Iron Nine added its other run in the second inning. Jack Mroz led off with a walk and stole second before Aiden Treue hit a one-out RBI single to left field.

RPP Revolution, with a roster also made up of North Jersey players, scored its run after the first two batters were retired in the top of the third.

After flipping its order to the top, Jason Carmichael tripled to right field. Blake Yerman followed with a run-scoring single to center.

Both pitchers were dominant the rest of the way.

“The lead was big for me,” Sawicki said. “I’m more comfortable. I can throw whatever I want and our defense can make plays.”
