Jersey Shore Select has ventured this weekend from its home base in Ocean County to Diamond Nation, hoping to win a championship at the 12U Summer Finale, Powered By Construction Risk Partners.

After one day of action, JSS is halfway toward that goal.

JSS opened play on Saturday morning with a 6-1 victory over NY Prospects Gold, and returned in the afternoon to gain a 10-2 victory over Middletown Eagles 12U.

The showing earned JSS the top-seed for the four-team playoffs on Sunday.

Tyler Grzywinski was a catalyst for JSS. In the win over NY Prospects Gold, he went 2-for-2 with a walk, scoring a run and driving in another.

Against Middletown, he was 2-for-2 with a walk, and also pitched a five-inning three hitter, with four strikeouts and one walk.

“We hit really well, ran the bases, played really good defense, the pitchers shoved and we just did everything right,” said Grzywinski after the opening game.

In that win, JSS accomplished a secondary goal leading into the remainder of the tournament.

Starting pitcher Matty Rose exited after allowing three hits and throwing 42 pitches (28 for strikes) over 2⅔ scoreless innings with his team ahead, 2-0. He struck out six and walked one. He’ll now be able to pitch on Sunday.

His replacement, Troy Delaluz, pitched the remaining 3⅓ innings, allowing one run on four hits, with one strikeout and no walks.

JSS scored twice in the second inning for a two-run lead over the NY Prospects Gold.

Paulie Langone singled to left field with one out, stole second and continued to third on a throwing error. Delaluz was up next and hit an RBI single to center.

After a foul out to third, Kellan Boedigheimer reached on a two-base error that sent Delaluz to third. A wild pitch during Gabe Zink’s at-bat scored Delaluz.

The lead expanded to 5-0 with three runs in the third.

After the first batter struck out, Cole Curley singled to center. Grzywinski was up next, and hit an RBI double to center.

NY Prospects Gold avoided the shutout when Angelo Bono (2-for-3) hit a full-count home run over the fence in left center with one out.
